It’s difficult to explain exactly what makes this curious coffee shop and gift shop quite so special and taken to the hearts of the local community. It is a marvellous mix of old and new, classy and comfortable, lively and relaxing with a wonderfully eclectic decor and range of gifts and homeware that combine to make a special and favourite place for all those who visit.
Since Hemingways first opened its doors in February 2010, they have endeavoured to create a warm inviting atmosphere that people really feel is their “home from home” when they are out and about in Haslemere town. They think they’ve succeeded! In addition to serving a fabulous range of hot and cold drinks (including alcohol for those tempted by something stronger than a latte!) and a huge array of freshly made scrumptious food to suit any time of the day, they also provide a welcoming space for anybody and everybody to just chill out and be!
Hemingways is a place of congregation, communication and celebration, where mothers and babies are as at home as business people tapping on their laptops. Whether you are alone reflecting on life or engaged in endless people watching, meeting friends and family or enjoying a romantic catch up, you’ll feel comfortable and at ease.
All food is freshly prepared on the premises and their tiny kitchen manages to produce a huge menu with something to appeal to all ages, tastes and tolerances (vegetarian, vegan, gluten, but, dairy etc. intolerant are all catered for). Each dish is lovingly (albeit speedily) prepared by their fastidious kitchen staff and only the finest (mostly local) ingredients are used. The cakes are all homemade by Sue who has been baking our cakes and tray bakes since they opened. The cakes are too numerous and ever changing to list in the menu, but are displayed on the counter, and create a gauntlet of temptation difficult to ignore! They always have an excellent choice of gluten-free options, and even a mouth-watering dairy free chocolate cake!
All coffees are made with roasted aromatic Arabica beans and crafted by their fully trained baristas. And for those with varying milk preferences, they think they have you covered! They offer locally produced whole milk and skimmed milk, as well as oat, soya, almond and coconut! If you can’t find any of them to your liking, there’s always Black! 🙂
With hot chocolate to die for (fully loaded is a meal in itself!) and a range of over thirty teas including fruits and herbal infusions, Chai lattes and hot toddies (when it’s chilly), I’m are sure they have something for you to cup lovingly in your hands.
Sourcing locally is important to Hemingways. It’s not always possible to buy all supplies from your doorstep, but they certainly try to as much as possible. The majority of the milk is from a local dairy, all cakes are all sourced locally and fruit and veg from a local supplier. If someone manages to grow tea and coffee I’m sure they’d be delighted (if not a little surprised) to buy it!
A hugely popular part of Hemingways is out outside seating area. No matter what time of year, come sunshine, rain or snow, you will find a brightly parasoled outdoor seating area. This comfortable front terrace is a marvellous sun trap in the spring and summer months and has full infrared overhead heating and incredibly cosy fleece blankets to keep you toastie and warm for all those cooler times of the year. It creates a wonderful space to watch the hustle and bustle of Haslemere go by, whilst having your drinks and food al fresco, and still be part of the throng of Hemingways, whilst taking in the fresh air.
For the past nine years, Hemingways has forged incredibly strong links with the local community. Not just the obvious role of a local coffee shop and restaurant to keep the town’s people well nourished and lubricated, but a huge involvement in hosting events with or for many local organisations such as Haslemere Chamber of Commerce, The Haslemere Fringe committee, all number of local schools, Haslemere Hospital, the Town Council, local charities, and many other local organisations. If you are part of a local non-profit organisation and would like to work with Hemingways on a project then please do not hesitate to get in touch with them and they will endeavour to accommodate. Haslemere and surrounding villages is a very special community and they value their ties with it and are very proud to be a part of it and a central meeting place for it.

"Such a fantastic scheme. As a business we have an offer on with the Mustcard which has given us a platform to reach more local customers. But more than that I have been personally using my card to shop locally in Haslemere and Midhurst. Some of the discounts are brilliant. The best part for me is the fabulous write ups on local shops and pubs that I otherwise would not have known about! We have visited so many new places because of the Mustcard, it has opened up our local area. I love scrolling through the business listings and exploring all the new places! Supporting the local independents, what could be better than that! Thank you Mustcard."May and Grace Bridal, Haslemere

In today’s fast changing world the things we value are shifting equally as fast. The move away from chain style shops and departments stores to online ordering for example. Within this the Independent shops have become the marker, not only for defining our towns, by giving them identity and individuality, but by increasing the sense of community. Supporting Independent small and family businesses keeps our towns alive. The Mustcard is a superb, affordable way for us to say ‘YES, we are in. YES we value and support our town’s individuality, it’s personality and it’s people’. The additional twist is that, in so doing, these amazing shops and their owners reward Mustcard Members with special discounts!! It’s a true win win!My Midhurst Life
