At The Rising Sun, the ethos in the kitchens is to let the ingredients do the talking. Their chefs keep things blissfully simple, knowing that great dishes are easy to come by when you’re using the very best produce.
Virtually everything there is homemade on the premises, with fresh ingredients sourced from local independent producers and suppliers. Fresh fish and seafood is delivered every day from the south coast, their beautiful British beef heralds from a trusted local farm, game comes from Milland valley and their fruit and vegetables are either grown in the village or come from the Sussex countryside.
The freshness of the ingredients makes for ever-evolving menus that change with the seasons. Usually though, you can expect to find a bar menu packed with comforting classics (including fish and chips and tender steaks), healthy salads and veggie dishes, alongside a blackboard menu reflecting fine cuts of meat and game and fresh seafood.
There’s a special children’s menu too, plus two great weekday offers (Ladies ‘wot’ Lunch & Early Bird) – helping to make The Rising Sun one of the best-value places to eat in The South Downs.

We came to the Rising Sun, aka ‘The riser’, last Saturday night and had another fantastic meal. We've eaten midweek lunches and dinners, Sunday lunch and now Saturday night and I can’t fault it, it¹s always been excellent. They’ve hit the mark with the menu, a solid range of tastes and crafted plates so neither the prices or menu are daunting. The ambiance is chilled and informal yet efficient and the staff know what they are doing. All this said, it¹s still a proper pub with drinkers at the long bar, group tables and chairs, games and the papers in front of an open fire. It can get busy so I advise booking on weekends.Rob E
"Just visited The Rising Sun for Sunday Lunch with my husband and his mum. The service was excellent and nothing was too much trouble. Asked for a small portion of the roast chicken for mum as she is nearly 90 and has a small appetite. They were happy to do a child’s portion for her (which some restaurants won’t do and food gets wasted).
